3D shows what a camera can't.

You can't film the inside of a machine, a technical process or a plant that hasn't been built. It may also be far too expensive to fly to Australia for a shoot. AI, meanwhile, doesn't understand the exact movement of your machine. With your CAD data, 3D can show it clearly and with technical accuracy. I develop 3D animation concepts with specialist teams. Storyboards and test images tell us early whether the direction works. Then we can produce the final images with a level of precision that other methods can't offer.

Explaining technology in motion

3D animation shows technical processes that are hard to explain with a camera.

Even before AI video became a subject, I was asking how to show things a camera simply can't capture. After our production company closed during the coronavirus pandemic, I spent a lot of time working with 3D animation.

At Black Frame in Mannheim, I managed major 3D productions, including work for Liebherr. It showed me what becomes possible when technical accuracy meets cinematic design.

3D still lets us show things realistically when AI can't reproduce their movement reliably or with technical accuracy. CAD data for the smallest component or an enormous excavator can be rendered down to the last screw, then staged cinematically by the right 3D designer.

I still enjoy projects where we can make something technically unusual visible. For those, I work with the specialist 3D designers in my network.

Exploded views

The connections become visible when an object separates into its individual parts.

Exploded views make complex products, spaces and processes understandable at a glance. They work particularly well for technical products, industrial systems and architecture: you can see how something is built, how its parts work together and what the system contains.

As in this example, the movement can begin realistically and almost unnoticed — until it creates a moment that would be impossible to film.

Precise 3D animation controls the effect. Position, speed, perspective and timing can be set for every element. The result isn't a random visual trick. It's a controlled movement that explains the product and catches the eye.
